Dear Editor,

I WRITE in desperate need of the East London Advertiser’s help as we are short of drivers and hosts for Contact the Elderly’s Tower Hamlets & Newham group—which could lead to its closure.

Contact the Elderly is a national charity working to reduce isolation and loneliness among housebound people over the age of 70 by organising traditional Sunday afternoon teas.

There are 310 groups in Britain, 62 of which are in London, running purely with the help of volunteers who reach more than 2,000 isolated elderly people living on their own who have little or no support from family or friends.

We have been in existence for more than 43 years now.

But we are not terribly well known.

Now some of our well-established groups in London are currently faced with an acute shortage of drivers and hosts, particularly in East London, which poses a real threat to the groups.

We are depriving the elderly of their monthly outing if we cannot find new volunteers. For many, this is the only time they can leave the house at all—our voluntary work is an absolute lifeline.

We have 13 elderly in the Tower Hamlets-Newham group who rely so much on the outing.

But this month again we unable to take them out.

I am hoping we can motivate the people of the East End to help us.

We offer frail, isolated, elderly people companionship, but are totally reliant on voluntary donations to carry out our work—please check our website.
