Dear Editor,

SOME disturbing information concerning the way Hackney Benefits office operates has come to my attention, as trustee of Turnaround E1, a small charity in Whitechapel helping East London’s homeless.

People are coming to me with reports of benefits not being paid, long delays in processing claims and misinformation about the status of claims being made.

For this to have happened once could be dismissed as a glitch’ in the system.

But to happen consistently suggests something more sinister.

Three people came to me last Monday (January 5) with stories of delays in payment, each tale the same as the others. I have heard more of the same from many sources.

Perhaps the authority could take the time off to explain what is happening.

This situation is causing genuine suffering. At Turnaround, we give out donated sandwiches. But last Monday we were cleaned out within minutes of the sandwiches arriving.

People were genuinely starving as a result of Hackney Benefits’ attitude toward those they are supposed to be assisting.

The Government recently announced $10 million aid to Gaza, which is surrounded by Arab nations who are among the richest states on Earth and well able to afford any help needed there.

Our rulers need to be reminded that charity begins at home and it is about time they took up residence.
