Fires in Tower Hamlets fall by two thirds in 10 years

The number of fires in Tower Hamlets has fallen my more than two thirds, figures published by the London Fire Brigade show.

The statistics indicate that the number of fires in the borough fell from 4,068 during the year in 2001, to 1,468 in 2011, representing a drop of 64 per cent.

In 2001, there were an average of around 11 fires per day, compared to just four in 2011.

Furthermore, the number of house fires has fallen from 384 in 2001 to 295 in 2011.

Bruce Epsly, the brigade’s borough commander for Tower Hamlets said: “The London Fire Brigade has targeted those people who are more likely to have a fire and provided them with potentially life saving advice and smoke alarms. People in Tower Hamlets are really benefitting from the hard work of our of firefighters.”

The overall number of incidents the borough’s brigade has fallen by half, from 11,789 in 2001 to 5,931 in 2011.
