The first phase of a sprawling, 26-acre construction scheme in what developers have labelled a “dilapidated pocket” of Bromley-by-Bow launches today.

The Sugar House Island construction scheme, will create 2,500 jobs for the borough, developers Vastint UK claim.

They say the project’s “creative quarter”, Dane’s Yard, will comprise of eight office buildings.

“The irregular spaces between the buildings impart heritage,” mused Michael Lees, owner of masterplanner ARC-ML.

Cafés and fast WiFi are among the carrots developers hope will lure creatives to the site, where commercial rents start at £30 per square foot.

About 1,200 homes will be built across the entire Sugar House Island project, though questions remain on how many of these will be affordable or social housing — along with their price tags.

Dane’s Yard opens later this year, when the Elizabeth Line comes into operation.
