IT EMERGED today that the former assistant chief executive of Tower Hamlets council who resigned earlier this year was earning £450 to £900 a day as a consultant with a government body.

Lutfur Ali joined the council in September 2008 and resigned in March this year after questions were asked about his consultancy work for the National College for Leadership of Schools and Children's Services.

He left his £120,000 a year job for other projects after he featured in a Channel 4 Dispatches programme about alleged extremism and the alleged influence of the Islamic Forum of Europe on Tower Hamlets council.

Information supplied following a Freedom of Information request to the www.towerhamletswatch.wordpress.com reveal that Mr Ali's consultancy work for the National College after he started his job at the town hall and was working for it three days a week during some of the time he was also employed by the council. However he ceased working for the National College in September 2009 and his contract ended on March 31 this year.

He was entitled to expenses of up to £80 a day from the College.
