A community caf in London’s deprived East End threw a festive first anniversary bash with recycled produce that the catering industry would normally discard.

The FoodCycle charity’s Pie in the Sky caf at the Bromley-by-Bow centre, first opened one year ago to help those at risk from food poverty or social isolation, held an afternoon of music, stalls and traditional games like apple bobbing.

Friday’s festivities also included a coconut shy, cake decorating and a scavenger hunt.

Volunteers prepared and served treats from surplus ingredients from the retail food trade including a vegetarian barbeque.

The charity tackles food surplus and uses spare kitchen space to create meals for families who often don’t have enough food to get through the week.

Most ingredients used by the caf are surplus that would otherwise go to waste which the charity reclaims from retailers and uses for healthy meals at low prices, serving up to 50 a day. It also runs healthy cooking classes.
