The former Labour MP of Bethnal Green and Bow has confirmed on her website that she will be one of the challengers to the job currently held by Boris Johnson.
The mayor sets policies and budgets for a range of key services in London.
The Mile End resident who was ousted by Respect's George Galloway by 823 votes in 2005 after eight years as an East End MP went on to advise Downing Street on equalities.
She is currently head of diversity at broadcaster Channel 4 and has made no secret that she would be attracted by the role as mayor.
.She recently ruled out running as the first directly elected mayor of Tower Hamlets.
