The family of a man who died with Alzheimer’s disease are opening a pop-up restaurant for an evening to raise cash for medical research.

Nina and Ed Fraser plan to set up their FedbyTed diner at Whitechapel’s BellaVita eatery in London’s East End later this month for the Alzheimer’s Society charity that’s close to their hearts.

Ed, 33, who “crowd cooked” at his own wedding and works in food sales by day, will be chef for the evening with his mum Christine and brothers Henry and Will acting as waiters.

“We want this to be the first of many pop-up restaurant events,” his journalist wife Nina, 35, said. “The Alzheimer’s Society was the obvious charity for us.”

Her granddad Christopher died in 1997 after having Alzheimer’s for nine years.

“There wasn’t much support for my grandma when he was diagnosed back then,” Nina recalls. “My dad had to look after him day and night.

“There was also very much the feeling that the condition was ‘the end of the world’, which of course it isn’t.”

Now the couple, who live with their baby son Digby in Bethnal Green, face further heartache as Ed’s own grandfather Derek has Alzheimer’s.

But Derek is receiving better, more stimulating care.

“We’d like to see as many people as possible understand the condition,” Nina added. “Those living with Alzheimer’s and their carers should have the best quality of life possible.”

Some 1,200 people are living with dementia in Tower Hamlets alone and the figure is set to rise, according to the Alzheimer’s Society.

The charity society’s east London manager David Morris said: “All our fundraising and public donations go towards research into finding a cure for dementia and services to help people live with the condition.

“I’m pleased the Fraser family have chosen us to benefit from this event.”

The Saturday night pop-up restaurant opens at 7pm on July 23 at 11 Dock Street, Whitechapel, with all proceeds from the £25 four-course menu with wine going to the Alzheimer’s Society.
