Free helpline set up for London consumers hit by recession debts

CHARITY bosses have set up a counselling helpline for consumers hit by the recession. Personal insolvency has reached record levels with 6,500 cases in London and support services struggling to cope, the Debt Advice Foundation warns
CHARITY bosses have set up a counselling helpline and website for consumers in London hit by the recession to find a way out of their debts.
Counsellors are already working in teams (pictured) ready to take calls.
Personal insolvency has reached record levels with 6,500 cases in London last year. There was a 27 per cent rise April to June, compared to the same period of 2008 before the recession.
Support services are struggling to cope as the recession bites, the Debt Advice Foundation warns.
“Our message to people in debt is don’t panic,” assured the foundation’s chairman Dennis Benson.
“There is a way out and there is help available. They don’t have to face debts alone.”
The Debt Advice Foundation, a charity promoting research and education around debt issues, has launched a freephone line to help deal with the increasing demand for support from people struggling with debts, run by a team of counsellors on 0800-2922077, six days a week 8am-8pm Monday-Friday, and 9am-5pm Saturday, or click here and go online.
