CAR owners are appealing against Town Hall rules which mean they will lose their parking permits outside their homes after eight years.

Town Hall bosses declared their housing complex on the Isle of Dogs a 'car free zone' in 2002-yet still sold them annual permits to park in the street.

Families have paid up to 1,000 for permits over the years. Now, eight years on, Tower Hamlets says the car owners in Millwall's Gaverick Mews development off Westferry Road won't be issued permits from next year.

The council's turn-around brought anger this week from Opposition councillor Tim Archer, who said: "It is wholly unacceptable that the council can allow residents to have permits for eight years and now say they can't."

A Town Hall spokesman said the restriction was "clearly set out in the planning agreement and should have been made clear to residents by their solicitors or landlords" when they moved in.
