GEORGE Galloway's Respect party has called for the police and council to respond to allegations of racist attacks.

Mr Galloway has written to Tower Hamlets Police Borough Commander Paul Rickett over two incidents of alleged racist assaults on members of the Bengali community.

But letters were sent a week ago and the MP for Bethnal Green and Bow is still awaiting a response.

Spokesman Kevin Ovenden said: "We have not even had a holding response saying that these matters are being investigated. We have heard nothing at all.

"There is a perception that the police are not doing enough to protect Bangladeshi people from a minority who are carrying out racist attacks and they need to be seen to act."

One incident relates to Monir Miah who was arrested and cautioned for assault after trying to protect himself and his family from a gang of five youths who hurled racial abuse and attacked him outside his own home earlier this month.
