A group which brought a taste of Africa to the East End has been handed a gardening gong.

The Zimbabwe Association landed the Group Achievement award at a ceremony hosted by national growing charity Garden Organic near Coventry.

It was recognised for nurturing a plot at Spitalfields City Farm, where group members grew nutritious foods from the African country.

Spitalfields City Farm’s Olivia Burt said: “The Zimbabwe Association have taught us about their traditional crops, cooked for us, sung for us and hugged us.

“They are an inspiration to work with and they have made the farm a brighter place to be.”

The ceremony was held last month.
