While O’s win on Tuesday was fully warranted, what had also been a long time coming is seeing Massey get the headlines in a victory

Leyton Orient’s man of the moment Gavin Massey admitted the squad want the League Two games to come thick and fast now that belief is returning under new boss Danny Webb.

The ex-Colchester United winger maintained his sensational form on Tuesday night with a brace to help O’s stun Plymouth Argyle by winning 3-2 at Home Park.

Sandro Semedo struck in the fourth minute of stoppage time to give Orient the victory, but Massey was at the heart of the move and has now scored five times in his last six matches.

“In the first couple of games the new gaffer was involved in, the results were disappointing and not what we wanted, but the performances had been really good,” insisted the 24-year-old.

“For him to keep our spirits high, even when we’ve felt rock bottom, is credit to him and now we have got the win at Plymouth.

“I think we could have got 12 points from the last four matches, but that’s been our luck this season, although it is only us who can get the club out of this mess.

“We’re looking forward to Saturday and we want game after game now because you don’t get a much better feeling than winning like we did at Plymouth.”

The way Orient claimed all three points was another tip of the hat to Webb and his coaching staff, who have galvanised this squad.

Last weekend Massey scored in the 88th minute to earn O’s a 1-1 draw at Yeovil and two more late goals gave them all three points on Tuesday.

Under Andy Hessenthaler, Alberto Cavasin and Andy Edwards, when Orient went behind, very rarely did they produce a comeback.

But with Webb in charge it seems the O’s players, who have struggled for consistency all season, have a lot more belief.

“We have an attitude now where we have nothing to lose. The referee wasn’t giving us much, but we are used to it because it has been like that most weeks,” added Massey.

“Plymouth had the crowd behind them, but the more the game went on, I felt my influence was growing and the team started to believe. The chances kept on coming, so the win is nothing less than we deserve.”

While Orient’s win on Tuesday was fully warranted, what had also been a long time coming is seeing Massey get the headlines in a victory.

The winger has been so consistent over the last four months and even when O’s have been suffering defeat after defeat, his level of performance has rarely dropped.

After scoring in the losses away to Portsmouth and at home to Carlisle United recently, Massey thoroughly deserved to see his goals this week earn Orient some reward.

Webb played the former Watford trainee as a forward at Plymouth and it paid off handsomely.

Massey added: “The gaffer changed my role on Tuesday, but I think I’m always going to be a winger.

“I was up front at Plymouth and Myles (Judd) and I have a good relationship on the right, but it was different this time.

“I had to link up with midfielders and (Sam) Dalby and the wingers, but being a wide man I know what they are going to do, so I think it worked well.”
