Central defender confident O’s will improve under Steve Davis, but knows the squad needs time

George Elokobi has praised the continued support of the Leyton Orient fans and promised the team will be where they want to be at the end of the National League season.

The O’s suffered an embarrassing 6-1 defeat away to Bromley on Tuesday night in front of 1,037 travelling supporters.

It was a hugely disappointing result after two encouraging home wins over Solihull Moors and Maidstone United.

Orient will aim to respond at Woking this weekend and Elokobi knows the squad will have plenty of backing wherever they go.

He said: “The fans have already showed they are behind us from day one and in the games we have played.

“You don’t get the attendances we have been getting at some League One teams, so it has been amazing.

“When I came into the changing room before the Solihull game the place was buzzing and I just said ‘wow’ to the gaffer.

“It is great to see the fans are behind us and turning up and long may it continue. I am so happy the supporters feel they have their football club back.”

More results like Tuesday and the Orient faithful won’t be so jolly, but everyone will be hoping it was only a blip.

Elokobi, speaking after the Solihull win, admitted nothing is won during the opening month of the season.

But Steve Davis will expect his team to bounce back at Woking and make it three wins out of five in the National League.

“Nothing is won in the first month of the season, so we will just take it one game at a time,” said Elokobi.

“I am hoping after August we can assess where we sit and then we move on to the next game again.

“It is a long, old season and hopefully come the end of it we are where we want to be and we will be happy.

“But for now there are plenty more games to be played and we will be positive and approach every one with that mindset.”

O’s head coach Davis only celebrated a month in charge last Thursday, so teething problems were to be expected.

It is virtually a completely different squad to last season and Elokobi expects the team to get better with time.

He added: “We know we are definitely not the finished article. We are still improving as a squad and I am sure there is plenty more to come.

“We will definitely improve under the gaffer and we will carry on working hard, but don’t get me wrong some days it might not happen for us.

“But again we just want to try and always go out there and put in a good performance that allows the fans to appreciate our efforts.”
