School pupils raised £900 for the Foodbank charity in Tower Hamlets by organising a non-uniform day.

Youngsters at George Green’s School on the Isle of Dogs were set free from their ties and blazers as part of a drive to support the scheme, which helped around 1,780 needy residents last year.

Tower Hamlets Foodbank’s project coordinator Amy Kimbangi said: “We are stunned and extremely grateful for the wonderful donation.

“We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the residents of Tower Hamlets. Without the desire of so many local people to help their neighbours in need, we would simply be unable to do what we do.”

The pupils held the non-uniform day after visiting the Isle of Dogs Children’s Centre, where they saw the benefits of Foodbanks first hand.
