THE story of the rise of Zionism in London’s East End and the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 is being thrashed out in a day-long seminar on Sunday.
Presentations and talks are being given by leading pundits from the London University’s Queen Mary College at Mile End, from University College London and from the School of Oriental & African Studies.
“This is neither pro nor anti-Zionist,” explained organiser Clive Bettington. “It looks at the galaxy of characters through history who either supported or opposed this most controversial of movements.”
The May 17 event is being run by his Jewish East End Celebration Society from 10am at Whitechapel’s Toynbee Hall settlement in Commercial Street, costing 35 (30 members).
