Giant pumpkin lands in time for Hallowe’en at Bethnal Green’s Morpeth School

What a whopper! This puzzling monster pumpkin appeared in the playground of a school in London’s East End and no-one has any idea how it grew so big.

Pupils at Bethnal Green’s Morpeth Secondary planted seeds in the playground garden last term and returned after the summer break to find the giant vegetable waiting for them.
They couldn’t find scales big enough to weigh it—so two lads wheeled it down to a local butcher in Bethnal Green.
“It was almost as heavy as some of the pupils themselves,” the school’s communications co-ordinator Jade Glenn said. “They came back after the holiday and this appeared in the school garden.”
Pupils attempted to weigh the monster pumpkin using scales in the PE department, but it was too heavy to show a reading.

So the green-fingered young gardeners pushed the distinctive orange monster vegetable in a wheelbarrow round the corner to Mr Bull’s butcher shop.
It tipped his scales at around four-and-a-half stone.

No-one knew what to do with it, except the school cook. She is turning it into pumpkin soup for lunch and pumpkin pie for pudding—just in time for Halloween!
