A teenage girl who fell to her death trying to escape a fire at her home in Mile End has been named locally as Meilan Duong.
The 17-year-old died as the blaze swept through the third-floor maisonette where she lived with her family in St Paul’s Way yesterday morning.
She fell from the fourth floor and was pronounced dead at the scene at 6am.
Fire fighters and paramedics were called to the blaze shortly before 6am where a man was rescued from a fourth floor bedroom before being rushed to hospital.
Three other people, who escaped the blaze before fire fighters arrived, were also taken to hospital.
Around 50 other residents who live in the flats above a row of shops escaped the building before fire fighters arrived.
Friends of Mei have set up a crowdfunding website to raise money for her family.
A statement on the Justgiving website says: “Meilan was a truly beautiful person inside and out, putting a smile on the faces of all those that knew her.
“All the money raised will go towards supporting her family during this very difficult time.”
