On July 20 the Girl Effect Live movement kicked off at 1pm in Vibe Bar followed by performances at the Village Underground to fight against the cycle of global poverty.

Performances at the festival included chart-hitting singer Jessie J, stand-up comedians Mae Martin and Ava Vidal, and spoken word performances from Dizraeli and James Massiah.

Launched in 2008 by the Nike Foundation, in collaboration with the NoVo Foundation, United Nations Foundation and Coalition for Adolescent Girls, the Girl Effect Live ethos is that poverty-stricken adolescent girls can help break the cycle.

Obstacles to success such as child marriage, teen pregnancy, HIV/AIDS can be avoided by investing in their education, health and economic future.
