LOCAL Government Minister Shahid Malik has been to London’s deprived East End to see how police and the local authority are operating to prevent violent extremism getting any foothold.
He heard from two of the 28 organisations funded by Tower Hamlets council’s �1 million preventing extremism’ programme which work with youth groups and from a college which is developing anti-extremism projects with schools.
Cllr Abdal Ullah, who heads the authority’s preventing extremism’ agenda, said: “Nobody is saying Tower Hamlets is a hotbed of extremism.
“But it’s important to nip in the bud anything that may be developing. That’s what we’re trying to achieve.”
Others involved in briefing the Minister were council Leader Lutfur Rahman, Police Chief Inspector Andy Howe.
The Minister told them he wanted to hear at first hand what was working on the ground, so that areas across the country could benefit.
