Sixty-eight people a week were injured in a collision involving a hit and run driver in London last year.

In the boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Newham, Hackney, and Waltham Forest an average over 20% of road casualties involved a hit and run driver.

The Green Party's London assembly member Jenny Jones will be urging Boris Johnson to reinvest money raised from the prosecution of uninsured drivers into expanding enforcement against the illegal drivers.

Jones said: "Dozens of people are being injured by hit and run drivers every week, yet the London Mayor has dumped the previous goal of reducing the number of illegal drivers in London. Mr Johnson has also taken away the money needed to expand enforcement action against uninsured drivers in areas like North East London where this cowardly crime is associated with nearly a third of road traffic injuries".
