Guy Fawkes gets his ‘come uppance’ again on November 5 when Victoria Park explodes in one of London’s best public fireworks displays.
The sci-fi themed display by Tower Hamlets council starting at 7pm is likely to attract tens-of-thousands of spectators with its synchronised special effects.
Last year’s display which attracted 75,000 spectators had the 1666 Great Fire of London theme on its 350th anniversary, instead of Guy Fawkes trying to blow up Parliament 61 years earlier.
But the pyrotechnicians haven’t always followed historic detail. They had Fawkes one year blowing up the rebuilt neo-Gothic Palace of Westminster with its Big Ben tower that had only been built after a blaze 250 years later.
The council also got its fingers burnt in 2007 when it dropped the Guy Fawkes theme altogether to stage a multicultural celebration instead—which led to flames of protest.

Meanwhile, St John Ambulance first-aid volunteers are getting ready for the Vicky Park display in case of injury.
Around 1,000 people every year visit A&E for injuries caused by fireworks in the weeks leading to Bonfire Night, the first-aid charity points out.
