THE point of a consultation is to get an accurate picture of what people think of our proposals to build new affordable homes, a new health centre and better recreation facilities on the Exmouth Estate in Stepney.
That’s why we have distributed regular newsletters and why we held a recent consultation day which was an opportunity for Swan Housing to learn about what people want and to think about how the plans can be adapted. The plans are not yet finalised and our consultations continue.
A hard core of leaseholders have strong opinions about the plans. But it is a shame they continue to spread misinformation and paint an inaccurate picture of the proposal that Swan Housing is consulting about (East London Advertiser, March 19, and Advertiser Website Letters).

Our plans affect just two vacant areas, one of which is a car park for the most part, hardly a green open space’. Both are little used and blighted by noise and pollution from Commercial Road.
The claimed number of trees to be removed is completely inaccurate. More trees will be planted than lost as a result of the proposal.
Those familiar with the area will know that the proposed new buildings will reinstate the street frontage which was established for more than 150 years before being demolished in the 1970s.
The hard core of leaseholders who see no need for more affordable homes thankfully don’t have to deal with the problems associated with waiting to be re-housed or the cramped conditions endured by overcrowded families.
Fortunately Swan is aware of the connection between easing the shortage of affordable homes and building more family accommodation in areas like the Exmouth Estate. We remain committed to the estate’s regeneration.
