London Senior Cup: Haringey Borough 1 Leyton Orient 2

Leyton Orient progressed into the quarter-finals of the London Senior Cup with a 2-1 win over Bostik Premier Division side Haringey Borough.

Goals from Ruel Sotiriou and James Alabi sealed the win for Orient - despite a late consolation for former O’s academy product Charley Barker at Coles Park.

The hosts Charley Barker had the first chance of the match when he fired the ball wide from inside the box after the ball fell to the former O’s youngster in the second minute.

Three minutes later team-mate Joel Nouble produced some good foot work to dance his way into the box but sent his effort well wide.

Tom Loizou’s kept piling the pressure on in the early stages, this time Karl Akinwande broke, but he was brought down by George Elokobi to give his side a free-kick.

Left-back Michael O’Donoghue stepped up to take the free-kick but could only hit the wall with his effort.

In the 19th minute the O’s midfielder Hector Kyprianou fired over the bar after Ruel Sotiriou played it into his team-mate.

Kyprianou then tried his luck again as he tried to break through inside the box but defender Scott Mitchell slid in and pushed the ball out for a corner.

After weathering a bit of a storm the hosts got another chance of their own in the 29th minute when Barker struck the ball, but it went spinning over the bar.

The visitors then broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute when Sotiriou drilled a shot on target and it was met by goalkeeper Austin Byfield.

The keeper mishandled the ball and it trickled into the net.

Brendan Shabani tried his luck moments after the goal – this time Byfield made no mistake as he tipped it over the bar.

In the 38th minute Alex Lawless was booked for the O’s as he wiped out Akinwande on the edge of the box.

Haringey failed to take advantage of the free-kick in a good position.

They did keep pressing in search of an equaliser but failed to capitalise and Orient went into the half-time break with a 1-0 lead.

Ten minutes into the second-half Akinwande fired a low free-kick under the wall but Janata got his hands to it.

Shortly after O’s Sotiriou had an effort held by Byfield before Akinwande crept a low shot through but it whistled just wide of the post.

In the 64th minute Kyprianou curled an effort on goal but keeper Byfield was equal to it and pushed it out for a corner.

Nothing arose from the corner and it was soon back under control from the hosts with Akinwande once again being the danger man as he let fly after being picked out by substitute Anthony McDonald but it was deflected out for a corner by Elokobi.

In the 75th minute McDonald tried his luck but it was deflected out as Orient weathered the late storm.

Haringey’s Joel Nouble then done brilliantly to keep the ball on the pitch and stop it going out for a goal kick.

The attacker flicked it up, brought it down with his chest, drove a shot on goal.

His effort rolled across the line and then off the post into Janata’s arms.

They kept pressing for an equaliser this time McDonald beating Jayden Sweeny and firing a shot before Orient counter attacked with Sotiriou leading the charge.

The Cypriot drilled a shot on target that Byfield couldn’t handle and he dropped it into the path of Alabi who slotted the ball home to double their lead.

In the 87th minute Borough clawed one back as Barker volleyed the ball into the bottom left corner from the edge of the box after the ball bounced around in the box.

Three minutes later Scott Mitchell was sent off for taking out Sotiriou as he looked to break clear.

Orient will now face Welling United in the quarter-finals.
