A headstone was finally placed at the grave of a soldier who won the Victoria Cross 150 years ago at a re-dedication ceremony in Tower Hamlets Cemetary Park.
Maj John Buckley’s unmarked grave was discovered by a chance two years ago by a local historian, who realised it belonged to one of the first 12 people ever to receive the honour of a VC.
The ceremony in Mile End on Monday was attended by Jim Fitzpatrick MP, soldiers from the 9 Regiment RLC and the Victoria Cross Trust.
Maj Buckley, who lived in Poplar, won his VC in the British East India Company for destroying an ammo dump in Delhi on May 11, 1857.
