TOP teacher Catherine Myers has been shortlisted for the 2009 Secondary School Head of the Year.

The boss at East London's Bishop Challoner Catholic Collegiate in Shadwell finds out at the UK Teaching Awards on Sunday week if she has got through to the ultimate gold 'Plato' award that is education's 'symbol of excellence'.

She has already taken the silver 'Plato' Secondary School category (pictured) at a regional ceremony earlier this year.

Mrs Myers joins 150 shortlisted teachers, heads, teaching assistants and governors nationwide for the awards at London's Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, on October 25, hosted by celebrity presenters Christine Bleakley and Jeremy Vine and screened on BBC2 at 6pm.

"I am up against some remarkable headteachers," she admitted. "To be recognised for doing a job I love is very rewarding."

Three other East London teachers also shortlisted in the awards are Tom Canning, Head of Tollgate Primary in Beckton, special needs tutor Kevin Higgins from Newham and class teacher Dan Lea from Gearies Infants in Redbridge.
