SCHOOL head Catherine Myers has been flying high after being named Headteacher of the Year.

The 64-year-old executive head at Bishop Challoner Catholic Collegiate Secondary was celebrating winning the prestigious Royal Air Force award by taking an aircraft for a spin.

Mrs Myers who was hailed a "mind-blowing dynamo of a woman" beat off around 500 headteachers across London to snatch the prize earlier this year.

She has been head for 17 years at the now-expanded Learning Village in Shadwell which includes both boys' and girls' schools and a sixth form centre.

But she left the school behind for the day last Friday and headed for RAF Halton flight training centre near Wendover in Buckinghamshire with some of her pupils.

The award also meant Mrs Myers was entered into the national finals of the 2009 Teaching Awards and last week she also joined all the finalists at a reception at Downing Street where she met Gordon Brown.
