Medics have been running a clinic in London’s East End today on how to relieve pain from pressure ulcers and to help sufferers learn about risks and where to get help.

A community nursing team from the Royal London held a public awareness session at Mile End Hospital with role-play where actors put learning into practice.

Regularly changing position when sitting or in bed helps reduce pressure on skin, the nurses advised.

Pressure ulcers usually develop over the bone that the body is sitting or lying on such as back-side, heels, elbows, ankles or spine. But mostly they can be prevented by looking for early warning signs such as pain on bony areas or skin discolouration.

A good diet helps keep skin healthy with foods that give protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals.

But anyone suspecting they might be at risk is being advised to see their GP and ask to be referred to community nursing.
