A dreary, clinical area at the new Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel has now been turned into the first A&E room in Britain with artwork created for people with mental health conditions.

The spruced-up room has a ‘hope wall’ with messages from former patients who have recovered which offer hope to those struggling in crisis who come to A&E.

Artist Mike Miles was hired and worked with patients to get to know their needs and with hospital staff to transform the room into a private and calm place.

The patients helped him design the space, choosing the colours and words. Having something inspiring to focus the mind while in a state of anxiety helps them feel like things will get better, he learned.

Consultant Rikke Albert said: “The room has gone from a dreary, clinical area to a calm, peaceful and comforting place.”

It was opened this week by Barts Health NHS Trust and East London NHS Foundation Trust.
