World boxing champ Barry McGuigan looked in at Chisenhale Primary in London’s East End to help a campaign to make kids lead a healthier lifestyle.
The school near Victoria Park is one of six in east London being given ‘Happy Hearts’ kits with tips about fitness and healthy eating.
His boxing academy has joined the London Legacy Development Corporation in a pilot project to produce the kits containing interactive games and equipment designed for youngsters aged six to 10 that will soon be available in all schools.
“I’ve always been passionate about keeping fit,” the champ explained. “So being able to instil this into the younger generation is great.
“The programme is about getting kids excited about sport and nutrition in a fun way.”

The kit includes tips on health, nutrition and how to keep active, which is being tested in the Olympic ‘host’ legacy boroughs of Tower Hamlets and neighbouring Newham, Hackney and Waltham Forest.
Other schools on McGuigan’s ‘hit list’ in the pilot project are Newham’s Colegrave Primary, Hackney’s Gainsborough Primary and three in Waltham Forest, Gwyn Jones, Handsworth and Mission Grove.

Tower Hamlets’ Chisenhale head teacher Helen James said: “The kits bring science, healthy eating and physical activity together in a fun way for the children.”
But her pupils, for the moment, were more interested in meeting the world champ—and getting his autograph.
