A grieving fiancee has spoken out following a four-year battle to sue a GP after her partner collapsed and died hours after being discharged from a minor injuries unit.

Joanne Preston recently received undisclosed damages in an out-of-court settlement against Dr Pang Choi, who is working for Barts Health NHS Trust.

He admitted breach of duty in failing to admit Mark Jobe, 31.

Dr Choi discharged Mark from the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, in January 2010 after less than half an hour after allegedly incorrectly diagnosing his symptoms as flu.

The following morning Mark suffered serious breathing difficulties and was found foaming at the mouth at the home he shared with Ms Preston in Turin Street, Bethnal Green. He was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

A post-mortem found he died of acute cardiorespiratory failure caused by a fatal blood infection, most likely the result of bacteria pneumonia.

A blood test could have shown signs of a systemic infection with life-threatening consequences.

Joanne said: “I’m furious with the doctor.

“Had the right tests been done, had he listened to me when I was describing the symptoms, had he kept Mark in for observations, [I believe] Mark would still be with us today.”

Joanne noticed Mark was unwell when he returned from a nightshift on the morning on January 15, 2010. His condition steadily deteriorated throughout the day and he developed symptoms including a high fever and delirium. He was taken to hospital at 6.45pm but discharged less than half an hour later, at 7.10pm.

The family’s lawyer, Paul Sankey, of Slater & Gordon, said: “This was an entirely preventable death.”

A spokesman for Barts Health NHS Trust asked the Advertiser to point out the trust had no involvement with this case as at the time of Mark’s death, Dr Choi was employed by Tower Hamlets PCT, which is now defunct.
