Research published to coincide with breast cancer awareness month month as research shows people in Tower Hamlets still lack understanding of key facts about the disease.
The drive follows a survey carried out by the London Independent Hospital, Stepney Green, which found that 74 per cent of people in Tower Hamlets had either suffered from breast cancer or knew people who had been affected by the disease.
The research also pointed to some common misconceptions about the disease, with 44 per cent of Tower Hamlets residents believing that most women diagnosed with breast cancer have a genetic predisposition to it.
Faisal Mihaimeed, a consultant breast surgeon at the London Indpendent Hospital, said: “You should know the symptoms of the disease, know what is normal for your body, and be able to quickly identify any changes.
“You mustn’t be complacent and it is vitally important to remember, regardless of sex, family history or genetic predisposition, everyone should be breast aware. The more aware people are, the more lives we can save.”
