Women who suffered after-effects from the radiotherapy they underwent for breast cancer up to 30 years ago are being offered help.
A radiotherapy injury rehabilitation clinic opened by Bart’s NHS trust is now providing treatment for those who received breast radiotherapy around or before 1990 who are now living with complex side-effects. The clinic has treated 25 patients so far since January.
Breast cancer specialist Marianna Shiafkou said: “Women who have been passed from pillar to post searching for pain relief have learned to cope over the years. But it means compromising their lives.”
Technological advances mean radiologists can now calculate doses far more accurately by measuring a tumour and targeting radiation to the nearest millimetre, reducing exposure to surrounding body structures.
