Across London, 1,864 patients were treated in 2016, with almost a third of those - 606- being involved in road traffic collisions.

There were 500 calls to people who had either been stabbed or shot, and 417 to those who had fallen from a height, the charity revealed.

The borough that received the most call-outs was Westminster, with 123 patients treated, while Hounslow was visited by one of the charity’s two Royal London Hospital-based helicopters just 18 times.

Jonathan Jenkins, CEO of London’s Air Ambulance, said: “The charity is here to serve everyone in London at all times.

“Trauma is the biggest killer of people under the age of 45, including children, and can sadly happen to anyone, anywhere.

“By releasing these statistics we are hoping to raise awareness of the vital work that we do to treat the critically injured, and show more people that we are a charity.”

London’s Air Ambulance medics have attended a number of major incidents in recent months, including the Croydon tram crash and the Westminster terrorist attack.
