Mildmay hospital held a ceremony for the laying of the foundation stone for a £multi-million redevelopment set to be completed next year.
The hospital, in Austin Street, Shoreditch, has been treating HIV sufferers since 1988, and is to be rebuilt next year in a £30m project which should be concluded next year to coincide with its 25th anniversary.
Last week’s ceremony marking the launch of the project saw staff, volunteers and trustees join together to reflect on the hospital’s achievements so far.
Religious broadcaster and Anglican priest Canon Roger Royle, was among the guests at the ceremony.
He said: “I’ve always thought of Mildmay as a positive statement of Christian love and healing. It’s wonderful that this work is continuing in such an exciting new way.”
The new hospital is to have an increased capacity, with 26 beds and 24 hour care available to patients.
