Moorfields sees way to improve patient care after Care Commission survey

Staff at Moorfields Eye hospital aren't good at explaining side effects of new medications, according to the Care Quality Commission.

They scored 4.3 out of 10 in the Commission’s 2012 Accident & Emergency survey, while getting only 2.4 for considering patients’ home and family situations before sending them home.

Moorfields’ nursing director Tracy Luckett said: “Surveys like this highlight areas where we need to make improvements.

“We will be looking at how we can improve information to those waiting to go home, who is there to care for them and possible danger signals to look for.”

But Moorfields A&E is one of the best in the country, according to the survey.

It scored 9.4 for information to patients about their condition or treatment, 9.3 for information or advice to their GPs and 9.2 for nurses and doctors listening to what patients had to say.

The eye hospital in City Road, near Old Street, also scored 9.2 for patients being treated with respect—the highest score for best performing NHS trusts in the country.
