Officials from NHS North East London & City today (Tues) opened the formal procurement process asking for ‘expressions of interest’ from GP practices to operate the high-profile Ludwig Guttmann centre at the former Athletes’ Village near Stratford, part of the 2012 Olympic legacy.

The emerging East Village will be home to 7,000 families next year, with further development around the park adding a projected 30,000 to 40,000 people over the next 15 years.

NHS Commissioning director Steve Gilvin said: “The GP service must provide good primary care for a diverse and rapidly-growing population, with a preventative approach.”

By early next summer, the centre would have been transformed from a testing and rehabilitation suite for athletes to a public health centre which will be the largest health facility in east London outside a hospital when fully operational.
