Ward Sister Tia Webb brought a roulette wheel and a poker game into a privately-run hospital in London’s East End for one of her sick patients.
The patient should have been on his honeymoon in Las Vegas with his bride—but ended up at the London Independent Hospital in Stepney Green when he was suddenly taken ill.
That’s when Tia stepped in—and borrowed a roulette wheel to set up a ‘mini casino’ in the ward which helped him feel better.
“I work in a role that allows me to go the extra mile in patient care,” she said. “After finding out about their cancelled honeymoon, it would have been impossible to fully recreate Las Vegas in Stepney Green—but the sentiment was there and the whole experience lifted their spirits during a difficult period.”
Going that extra mile has now earned Tia the ‘Carer of the Month’ accolade and a place on the London region shortlist for BMI’s national ‘Carer of the Year’ title—up against nominations from 60 hospitals across the UK.
