‘School Chef of the Year’ Alison Gann put the spotlight on the dinner ladies in London’s East End when she gave kids a slap-up lunch.

She used her special recipes to cook up a healthy plate of grub for the kids as part of National School Meals Week which was launched this year at Shadwell’s Bishop Challoner Secondary.

The school in Commercial Road was chosen by the Local Authority Caterers Association for the launch for a third time for the annual event since 1993, kicking off a week of activities around the country to promote healthy meals.

Tower Hamlets council’s school meals service this year achieved the Soil Association’s ‘Food for Life’ bronze award for an independent guarantee that what’s on the menu is freshly prepared, free from additives and better for animal welfare. The service aims for healthy meals for East End pupils that meet the government’s nutritional standards as well as giving kids a much needed boost during the school day.
