Tower Hamlets Mayor opens new Riverside Centre

PUBLISHED: 15:05 29 May 2012

The Riverside Centre celebrated a new lease of life last week as its re-opening was marked with a visit from Tower Hamlets Mayor Lutfur Rahman.

It had previously been known as the Poplar Day Centre, and was located in Mile End for over ten years, but it marked it’s relocation to newly refurbished premises in Lawn House Close, Marsh Wall with a visit from the Mayor last week.

The centre provides day care, support and activities for 40 elderly people, with an emphasis on encouraging independence and social interaction amongst its users.

Mayor Lutfur paid tribute to its valuable role during his visit. He said: “It was great to meet the residents and see how they have settled into the new centre. Our day centres provide an excellent service to the elderly residents in the community and the Riverside Centre is a great example of this.”

Riverside Centre Manager James Craddock is delighted with how smoothly the move to new premises has gone. He said: “Our users were a bit anxious at having to move from a centre they had been going to for many years, but they have all settled in really well at the new centre and think it’s wonderful.”
