Brisbane Road side suffered their second defeat of the league season last night

Leyton Orient head coach Ian Hendon was disappointed with the goals they conceded against Carlisle United last night (Tuesday) as they suffered a first home defeat of the League Two campaign.

Second half strikes from Derek Asamoah and Antony Sweeney earned the Cumbrians all three points at Brisbane Road.

Mathieu Baudry had scored two minutes after Asamoah’s opener, but the visitors got back ahead again with 18 minutes remaining and that was how it finished.

Orient hit the crossbar twice through Dean Cox and Ollie Palmer also hit the post while they had a number of other chances, but again lacked a clinical touch in front of goal.

Hendon said: “If teams were playing how we are playing against us I would be concerned. Alright we have conceded two goals against Carlisle and for the first one they have just played through the middle of the back four, which is disappointing.

“But we do have a lot of possession and we do play forward, our full backs do bomb on and give us a lot of width, but we tell our players at the back to stay switched on.

“They need to be ready and on that occasion for the opener they weren’t. I think we are vulnerable to the counter attack, especially at home.”

The O’s boss paid tribute to the Cumbrians game plan, which included flooding the midfield to stop the footballing play of the hosts.

But the Brisbane Road outfit delivered so many balls into the box and had a number of chances, they just once again failed to display that cutting edge in the final third.

Blair Turgott went close late on, firing over the crossbar from inside the penalty area deep into stoppage time and that was Orient’s final opportunity.

“We knew what Carlisle were going to be about and to be fair, their game plan has worked,” admitted Hendon.

“They went a goal up and they probably weren’t expecting us to hit back straight away, but they have sat their and tried to frustrate us for long spells.

“They manage to break and get the goal and probably think they have done their job at 1-0, but the lads come back again.

“Even at the end Blair has had a shot that the goalkeeper has tipped over the crossbar and the referee has given a goal kick so I don’t know what they see sometimes.”

To compound the bad news for the O’s, Hendon confirmed after the match that Paul McCallum is set for a long spell on the sidelines.

The young forward was forced off on a stretcher against Northampton Town on Saturday and is seeing a specialist this afternoon.

Hendon added: “Paul has had a scan on Monday and it has come back and there is a lot of medical terminology, but he is seeing a specialist on Wednesday afternoon.

“We will have a lot better indication of the seriousness of the injury and how long it is going to see him sidelined. It is going to be a long term one sadly and we wish him a speedy recovery.

“We will look at what the diagnosis is on Paul and we will go from there with regard to bringing people in to replace him. I always have people in mind.”
