Visitors to the Idea Store in Whitechapel have helped celebrate Black History Month with the website launch of a new exhibition.

The PAST Project exhibition will tour London, but its website opened at the Idea Store on October 6.

The exhibition explores what life in the East End was like during the 1950s for the Afro Caribbean people who emigrated there.

Those at the Idea Store took part in activities including Somali tea-tasting and the chance to create a box of dreams, inspired by Martin Luther King.

More than 100 people, including MP Diane Abbot, offered to share their recollections as part of the interactive exhibition.

Anna Haward, Heritage Officer for Tower Hamlets Council, said: “We were delighted to launch the PAST Project website. It provides a fascinating glimpse into Caribbean, Ghanaian and Nigerian histories from London’s East End.”

The PAST Project is run by the African Heritage and Educational Centre; anyone interested in hosting the exhibition should contact them on 020 8558 6811.

The website can be viewed at www.pastproject.org.uk
