Dear Editor,

WHAT a shame that Woolworth’s in Chrisp Street Market in Poplar has closed down (East London Advertiser, December 24).

I met my husband at Woolworth’s in 1950. I was working as a sales girl in the store which had a snack bar where he used to call in lunchtime with the boys from Poplar polytechnic.

He asked me for a date and we got engaged in 1952 and married in March, 1954. We have six children, 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In March we will have been married 55 years.

We moved from Poplar 10 years ago to Aveley in Essex, but I still love getting my Advertiser delivered every week.

I only have happy memories of Woolworth’s and the crowd of girls I worked with, all probably in their 70s now.
