Tower Hamlets Council has been urged to replace an iconic piece of public art removed from Bethnal Green 16 years ago.
A petition to have a replica of the Woman and Fish fountain returned to Frank Dobson Square on the Cleveland Estate was received by the full council last night.
The statue, by Clerkenwell-born artist Dobson, was the centrepiece of the square at the junction of Cambridge Heath Road and Cephas Street from the early 1960s.
It was removed in 2002 after being repeatedly vandalised.
A bronze replica of the original statue was reproduced in 2007 and sits on the Isle of Dogs, but does not contain a fountain.
Island Gardens Conservative councillor Peter Golds said: “Let us work to bring our art back to the people of this borough.”
