A SURVIVOR of the nuclear bomb which dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima in 1945 will be speaking to a meeting of peace activists.

Shoso Kawamoto was just a schoolboy when the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in August 1945. His sister who also survived the initial blast died six months later from leukaemia and Mr Kawamoto had to fend for himself.

The legacy of the bomb has blighted his life, his sweetheart's family turned him down for fear their children would be born disabled.

Now in his late 70s he acts as a volunteer for the Hiroshima Museum in Japan and has devoted his life to sharing his story in a bid to prevent nuclear bombs being used again.

He is the guest speaker at Tower Hamlets CND on Thursday August 5.

The meeting starts at 7.30pm at St Paul's Church, at the corner of Burdett Road and St Paul's way in Bow Common.

He will be accompanied by Mayumi Yamane, who will translate for Mr Kawamoto, and is the Vice-Director of the Museum in Hiroshima. The following day they will both attend present at the annual commemoration of Hiroshima Day held at 12 noon in Tavistock Square, Bloomsbury.

All are welcome to both events, where refreshments will be served.
