A Holocaust survivor met boys at an East End secondary school to talk about his harrowing experiences and hear about the teenagers’ recent visit to Auschwitz.

Zigi Shipper, 82, was separated from his father after war broke out and ended up in Poland’s ?odz ghetto with his grandparents.

Later in the war, Mr Shipper narrowly escaped execution in Auschwitz-Birkenau and was sent to work.

Tragically, Mr Shipper – who came to the UK in 1947 - never saw his father again and to this day has no idea what happened to him.

The Holocaust Educational Trust organised Monday’s assembly at the school in Commercial Road as part of Holocaust Memorial Day and deputy mayor of London Richard Barnes also attended.

A group of students who had visited Auschwitz-Birkenau discussed their trip with Mr Shipper.
