HOME Secretary Alan Johnson was in Shadwell today to hear about the success of safer neighbourhood policing and bang the campaign drum for Labour.

He visited the Dawatul Islam Centre on Bigland Street to discuss projects to slash crime in east London.

He said that crime reduction is one of the most important issues in this election and added: "I disagree with Boris Johnson fundamentally about reducing police officers in London."

He said police on the streets were essential in the fight against crime - along with community support.

Mr Johnson joined Labour candidate Jim Fitzpatrick who is running for the new constituency of Poplar and Limehouse and has been the MP for the old constituency of Poplar and canning Town for 13 years.

It is Mr Johnson's second visit to the new constituency in the run-up to the General Election.
