Hops have been planted in East End boozers to involve regulars with the art of British brewing.

The plants grown will be used to create London’s first ‘crowd sourced’ ale, True Brew, by the Meantime craft brewer.

The brewery has planted the hops in a selection of pubs such as the Water Poet in Spitalfields, Crown and Shuttle in Shoreditch and the Hoxton Hotel, as well as bars including The Canteen in Spitalfields and Canary Wharf, Harca in Bromley-by Bow, View Tube in Stratford and Waitrose in Canary Wharf and Stratford.

The hops will be dried and added together with malt, yeast and water, then left to mature for eight weeks before being kegged and ready to serve.

This move to create the new brew comes with a revival in local brewing with around 40 breweries now operating in London. The industry had all but died five years ago with just three working breweries left.
