A prestigious health service ‘A’ list has recognised the Royal London Hospital’s Alwen Williams as one of the top 10 NHS chief executives in the country.
She was placed in the annual Health Service Journal list in ninth place out of all 249 trusts.
Alwen was appointed in 2015 to head Bart’s Health when the Royal London, Newham and Whipps Cross hospitals were rated ‘inadequate’ by the Care Quality Commission.
But the ratings at Britain’s biggest NHS trust, with its £1.4 billion turnover and 16,000 employees, have improved and the health trust’s financial deficit reduced.
The hospitals have been upgraded to ‘requires improvement’, while St Bartholomew’s in the City has been rated ‘good’.
“Our progress is down to our staff,” she insists. “It’s great to be recognised in such a well-regarded list, but the credit must go to all the Barts Health team.”
The judging panel considered three criteria—personal example set by the chief executive, performance of the organisation they lead, given its circumstances, and their contribution to the nation’s health and social care system.
