FAMILIES got a firey start to the New Year in a tower block in London’s East End when a blaze broke out at the stroke of midnight on Wednesday.

An overflowing communal paladin rubbish bin caught light at the foot of the stairs at Sandall House in Old Ford Road, Old Ford, by Victoria Park, as Big Ben was chiming in the New Year.

It caused the entire stairwell to fill with smoke which seeped along corridors.

“It caused panic among families,” said senior officer Narinder Dail.

“All floors looked as though they were alight when we arrived, but it was only smoke.

“We told the families to stay in their flats and keep the front doors closed while we dealt with the fire in the rubbish chute.”

Police were later investigating the cause. No-one was injured or affected by the smoke and there was no structural damage. The fire was under control in minutes.
